The survey asks questions about what research methods students use, which online legal research providers they are aware of and currently use and their experiences of legal research provider training etc. This is genuine market research survey conducted within the code of conduct of the Market Research Society by an independent agency, Synovate, and there is absolutely no sales or marketing involved and all responses are totally confidential. The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes and all students who complete it are eligible to be entered into a prize draw to win £1,000 of Virgin vouchers. Ten further entrants will be drawn at random and will each win £100 of Virgin vouchers.
LexisNavigator
allows users to search for content in LexisLibrary using legal terms that they encounter in their studies or research. It’s a growing resource, so far LexisNexis have indexed 850 legal terms and will be increasing the number of terms over the coming months. The list of terms has been compiled by identifying words and phrases appearing in top 100 searches across either Halsbury’s Laws or all subscribed commentary within the last 4 months. It can be found in the Quick Find Search Box on the Home Page as ‘Find a legal term.’
This box allows users to type in a legal term and be provided with a detailed definition of that legal term taken from Words and Phrases Legally Defined, 4th ed.
The result also provides the user with links to key cases, legislation and narrative definitions from key major works such as Halsbury’s Laws as well as related legal terms.
As an example using the search term ”absent without leave” gives an impressive range of results.
LexisNexis are keen for feedback on this new resource. If there are legal terms that you would like to see in the service that are not currently available, please email feedback@lexisnexis.co.uk with the details so it can be considered for inclusion.

Hi All,
Happy New Year!
I wanted to remind everyone that I am still running the LexisLibrary drop in sessions every Monday and Wednesday from 12-2pm but now in the 4th floor Study Area not the cyber cafe.
Please come along with any queries you have about LexisLibrary.
LexisLibrary is not only great for researching cases and legislation, but if you’re filling out application forms there are some useful commercial awareness sources as well as features to research current or past cases of the firm that may not be posted on their website. Drop in if you would like to know how and I will be happy to help.
Also, due to revision workshops please note a change to some drop in sessions from Monday 24th January. These will also take place in the 4th floor study area:

She is here to help you use all the features of Lexis Library.
Depending on the demand there may be more sessions each Wednesday, but the drop in sessions will still run every Monday 12-2pm in the Cyber Cafe.

Westlaw and Lawtel Legal Research Sessions (Both LPC and GDL students can attend
Do you ever wake up with a strong desire to learn more about online legal research? Probably not.
Good news, Westlaw and Lawtel legal research sessions are now live.
Feel free to sign up to these on Elite or pop by to one of the drop-in sessions and immerse yourself in a diet of practical research tips.
Drop-in sessions (Basement Cyber Café) every Monday between 10:00-12:00 ending on 13th December starting again in January

Raffle: between now and the end of January, a raffle will be held at each Thursday session and the winner will be presented with a set of four Westlaw shot glasses, a pair of Westlaw headphones and a handful of pens.

Dear Students,
I am running online research sessions that are advertised on Elite – Events and Sign up but I understand that you may not be able to attend these sessions if they clash with your classes or if you are too busy.
Just to remind you that there is lots of online help in the My Library tab on Elite but in addition to that I want to give you a few useful tips here in case you miss my talk. Also you can ask me for help anytime in the library.
You can find access to all our subscribed databases on Elite in the My Library tab under databases and electronic resources.
If you have a legal question but you don’t know what sources each database contains you could start with using JustCite which is listed in the electronic resources section. Click on JustCite then - click the gray bar which says continue to JustCite – this will lead you to a search box.
For example: type in the citation : [2001] 2 W.L.R. 992 and click on the result link of the same name which will lead you to Westlaw which is automatically linked to the Westlaw database and will take you directly to the full text of the case without you having to search in Westlaw or put in any password.
If you search for an All England Law Report if you know the citation it will take you through to Lexis Library in the same way.
On JustCite you can also search for legislation, journal articles, use keywords, free text search, find EU information and it will lead you through to the database containing the full text. If the College of Law don’t subscribe to the source it will tell you the name of the publisher where you can find it. JustCite also links to free websites and legal information online and because JustCite is a trusted source the links through to the websites will be safer than relying on your own judgment to know if it is an authoritative source.
On the subject of using free information on the web remember that sites can be out of date and the law is always changing so even Government websites may be behind so always look for a date on the information you are reading online to see how current it is and to be safe you may have to look for the same infomation in two or more places to make sure it is accurate. If you are uncertain you can always ring the contact details on the website or if it is a database you can ring the helpdesk to make sure.
You can find case and legaislation information on both Lexis Library and Westlaw, they both have lots of sources of information including, case citators, law reports, journal articles, European information. To check what sources they have go to the source tab and look up individual sources.
Be aware that not all legal information is available online and some of the older cases or Scottish law or International law will not be available in the subscribed sources some might be in paper form like the Old English Reports available in the Moorgate library on the 1st floor also some information may be freely available online for example Europa http://europa.eu/index_en.htm :-

For free access to UK Legislation you can use the government website: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ this is a combination of the OPSI website and the Statute Law database which means you have access to original legislation at date or enactment but also some amended legislation see link for further explanation. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/help#aboutOpsiSld

UK Legislation Status Snapshots – An amalgamation of the Halsbury’s Is It In Force and Halsbury’s Statutes Citator sources
- This source gives you a quick at-a-glance snapshot of all covered UK Acts providing you with commencement information and amendments in one place.
- It can be accessed from the “Sources” drop-down list on the Legislation Search Form.

The latest Moorgate Media newsletter (issue 3) includes an invitation from your Lexis student rep. Ahmed Badr to take the LexisNexis Online Research Certification test.
The certificate can be used to demonstrate to potential employers that you have reached a level of competence in using LexisLibrary’s online research services.
You’re given an hour to complete the test which consists of 15 questions. The pass mark is 13/15.
